Cynthia Benbow, D.V.M., C.V.A.
Founder and Veterinarian
Dr. Cynthia Benbow is a native of Metairie, Louisiana, having attended St. Edward the Confessor Elementary School and St. Mary’s Dominican High School. In 1996, Dr. Benbow completed her undergraduate degree at Southeastern Louisiana University, and in 2000 she graduated from Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine. After obtaining her D.V.M. degree, she moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. In Knoxville, she gained valuable small and large animal experience at Seymour Veterinary Clinic.
Dr. Benbow became interested in acupuncture as a complementary treatment to traditional veterinary medicine. Subsequently, she studied acupuncture at Colorado State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine under their Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians program. After successfully integrating acupuncture into her practice, Dr. Benbow was asked to return to CSU to assist with teaching other veterinarians the practice of veterinary acupuncture.
In 2002, Dr. Benbow created a home-based veterinary practice, offering mobile veterinary services as The Visiting Vet. Dr. Benbow sold this Knoxville-based business in 2004 before returning home to Metairie, and opened a new mobile veterinary service known as A Visiting Vet. This practice was still in its developmental stages when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005. As with many local businesses, the impacts of Katrina took their toll on A Visiting Vet too. Dr. Benbow's clientele was scattered across the country, and she suffered flat-tires daily from driving through hurricane debris while trying to reach those clients that were still in the area; the financial impact and time burden of traveling in the post-Katrina New Orleans metro area sparked her to take on a more stable business venture.
In November 2005, Dr. Benbow opened West Metairie Plaza Veterinary Clinic (WMPVC) in Metairie, Louisiana. WMPVC was a full-service veterinary clinic, offering wellness, treatments, surgery, dentals, x-ray, and, of course, acupuncture. Under this practice, Dr. Benbow was better able to fulfill more of her dream of helping the pet community. WMPVC began to grow quickly and word of her acupuncture services started getting around; soon clients were driving from other states so Dr. Benbow could perform acupuncture on their pets. Dr. Benbow’s practice of combining Eastern (acupuncture) and Western (traditional) practices provided the integrative medicine people were looking for, and it offered a truly holistic approach to veterinary care for pocket pets and companion animals.
In November 2011, Dr. Benbow expanded her practice with the addition of a new clinic in Old Metairie, Louisiana, known as Benbow Veterinary Services (BVS), where she became known as the “Old Met Vet.” Being the owner and operator of BVS has allowed Dr. Benbow to continue her dream of offering both traditional veterinary medicine and veterinary acupuncture to the New Orleans metro area, and if you’ve ever had the opportunity to meet Dr. Benbow, then you know she strives to provide the best for her clients.
Dr. Benbow and her husband Matt have 2 daughters, Taylor and Madison, as well as an extended pet family that includes Chi-Chi and Katrina. Chi-Chi is a Chihuahua they adopted in 2001 in Knoxville. Katrina is an English Mastiff that adopted the family when they were evacuated to Houston during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
