The Importance of Routine Pet Exams
Why are routine pet exams so important to your pet's health? Typically, we recommend routine exams at least once a year for most pets. For older pets or those with a history of medical problems, we may recommend more frequent examinations, such as once every six months. Either way, we have found that routine wellness exams and check-ups make it easier for us to keep an eye on your pet's health, monitor it for any changes, and be on the lookout for any potential signs of problems. In many cases, routine exams can be used to detect "red flags" that indicate the start of serious medical problems. And of course, with early detection and diagnosis, the chances for successful treatment or management are significantly higher for your pet.
In addition to keeping an eye out for potential problems, wellness exams can be a great way to enjoy a clean bill of health for your pet. This, in turn, can give you greater peace of mind as a pet owner that your beloved pet is in good health.

At Benbow Veterinary Services, our dedicated Metairie veterinary professionals understands the importance of keeping your pets healthy and happy. We believe that a major part of maintaining and protecting your pet's health is having them seen by a veterinarian for routine wellness exams, which is precisely why we offer comprehensive pet exams right here in our office, in addition to our wide range of other services, including emergency/urgent care, surgeries, and more.
What to Expect From Your Pet's Exam
When you bring your pet into our office for an exam, we'll begin by taking some time to get to know both you and your pet. We'll want to check your pet's weight as well as perform a visual exam of your pet's coat and other features. This is also a good time for you to bring up any potential questions or concerns you have about your pet's health or behavior with our veterinary staff.
From there, we'll conduct our comprehensive exam, the specifics of which can vary based on the type of pet you've brought in. However, most exams will include a routine check of your pet's heart rate, breathing, eye health, and ear health. If we spot any potential signs of medical problems, we may also recommend additional testing, which we can perform here in our office.
At the end of your pet's exam, we may make recommendations regarding your pet's diet/lifestyle, and check to make sure that your pet is up-to-date on all vaccines and immunizations.
